"I’m being made redundant but how do I know whether this should happen? What are my rights and who can help me?"

Redundancies arise where a job no longer exists, or the employer needs fewer of those jobs. It is always a difficult
situation to be involved in, but UFS can offer help to members.

There are basic steps which your employer will follow, and UFS can help ensure that these questions are answered:

> Consultation – What are the reasons for the redundancy and what is the process being used?

> Selection – Who is at risk of redundancy and what system is to be used to select individuals?

> Redeployment – Are there other jobs available to avoid redundancies?

> Notice – Are you receiving your full entitlement to notice?

> Redundancy Pay – Are you getting your full entitlement to Redundancy Pay?

UFS can assist you throughout any redundancy process. In collective redundancies, where UFS are the recognised union, we will be included in the consultation process by the employer.

If these are individual redundancies, we can still advise you on how best to approach individual consultation and what you should be receiving.

UFS offer assistance which can range from telephone advice on queries to representation in formal challenges to redundancy selection.

If you are informed that your employer is considering redundancies in your area, then you should contact UFS as soon as possible.
